Groups
Many students who come to the Counseling Center find that their concerns can best be addressed through participation in group counseling. Most quarters, the Center offers a variety of groups, ranging from interpersonal therapy groups to topical groups (e.g., Anxiety Group, Ph.D. Support Group, etc.). Groups require an intake session and brief meeting with the group leader. Please contact the Counseling Center for more information, 206-543-1240. Following are descriptions of the workshops offered this quarter:
Graduate Student Interpersonal Processing Group: a process-oriented group to increase understanding of self and others and to improve relationship skills. A primary focus of the group will be to help graduate students address concerns fairly typical of the graduate school experience including (but not limited to): time management; academic pressures; balancing work and personal life; relationships; communication; “imposter syndrome;” boundary setting; and self-care. Please note that this is a therapy group and not a support group, despite receiving and giving support and feedback being a part of the therapeutic group process.
Men’s Group: a group to increase self understanding and to improve relationship skills. Relationships can be stressful and a men’s group can offer a non-judgmental way of sorting through these concerns. You may be surprised to find that the other men in the group wrestle with some of the same problems you do. By sharing different perspectives on familiar issues each member can find a new sense of strength within and ease in their relationships.
Phoenix Rising: a process-oriented support group is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are survivors of sexual abuse, sexual assault, or sexual trauma experienced in childhood or as adults. The goal of this group is to provide a healing, empowering, and safe space for survivors to discuss and receive support around a range of issues including relationships, intimacy, sexuality, safety, mind-body awareness, balance, sense of control, communication, and trust. Attention will also be given to providing some self-regulation and mind-body awareness skills as appropriate.
Understanding Self and Others: Find new ways to understand yourself and your relationships by gaining new perspectives from other men and women. We will learn about different ways of connecting with others by sharing about issues such as: feeling distant from others; pressure to meet others’ expectations; setting boundaries; worrying about burdening others; and concern about how others see you.
Workshops
The Counseling Center offers a variety of workshops each quarter that address topics such as study-skills and career-related issues. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is the world’s most used indicator of adult personality patterns. It identifies individual preferences on four dimensions, two related to job content and two related to work environment. The results of this assessment can help guide choice of academic major, career direction, and help foster understanding and appreciation of individual differences in interpersonal relationships. Registration Required. Schmitz 401 |

The Strong Interest Inventory identifies interests and compares this information to the likes and dislikes of individuals in over 100 occupations. Where there is similarity in interest, there is likely to be job satisfaction. Results from the SII include a list of careers that may be of interest, as well as general “themes” to consider when choosing an academic major and/or career direction. Registration Required.
